renovation

Thanks to apps such as Tik Tok and Instagram, we are all being shown the latest home trends and get to see first-hand the renovations people are doing to their homes daily. Through lock-down especially, we are all being inspired to complete DIY projects or home renovations that we would probably never usually consider doing. The internet has made our inner interior designer blossom, but there are still things to consider before starting that next project. Below are some tips that will help you to plan for your next renovation ideas:

Make sure you have the necessary tools

Most projects normally require many different tools and types of equipment, so you can’t really enhance your home with just your hands. Before you begin any project, double-check that your toolbox contains all of the tools you’ll need. Keep in mind that some project types, particularly those involving plumbing or electrical systems, will necessitate the use of specialised equipment. If you’re unsure, speak to a professional or research online. There are lots of great how-to videos on Tik Tok, Instagram and Youtube.

Make sure you budget and save

Home renovations and improvements are not cheap. But that does not mean you should be cutting corners and risking damage down the line. but going all out is even more so. Instead, figure out where you can afford to switch materials or ideas for a more affordable option. Where possible,  Use a larger budget for anything that is extremely costly and would leave you out of pocket to replace if anything went wrong. Examples include radiators and bathroom or kitchen appliances. There are lots of items you could source from second-hand stores and upcycle them to save you money.  A good way to decide where your money should be spent is thinking about the rooms you’ll be spending the most time in. If you love to entertain and cook for your family and friends, then money may be better spent to enhance this space so you feel like you are getting more benefit from the money you’ve spent.

Finish your renovation faster by hiring a skip

When undergoing house renovations, you’ll encounter lots of mess and lots of materials and rubbish that you will need to dispose of responsibly. A convenient way to manage this is with skip hire. Skips come in a variety of sizes that will suit any scale of the project. It will be delivered and collected for you, meaning you won’t have to make many trips to the tip, saving you time and stress and meaning you can focus on your project.

Prioritize tasks based on the severity

When doing a renovation, there will be some important tasks that need to be focused on before you can do the fun bits. Figure out the parts of the project that will save you time in the long run or may cause extra problems if they’re left too late.

Figure out what will add value to the property

It can be easy to get carried away with home improvement projects and spending money on large changes because you want your home to look nice. That’s understandable, but it’s wise to prioritise tasks that will add value to your property in the long run. There are lots of improvements you can make to your home, but it can sometimes be wasted money if you won’t get it back if you end up deciding to move. You can always contact a local estate agent and ask their advice on local valuations and things they’d recommend you do to your home that will increase its value. Anything that adds square footage or an extra bedroom will more than likely see your house increase in value.

Remember ideas for your next project

When you’re doing one project, it can give you ideas for something else you want to change in your home. However, it is not always affordable to work on these straight away. Keep a journal of your ideas and make mood boards to keep yourself inspired. Apps like Instagram and Pinterest are great ways to save posts of designs and room ideas that you think would suit your home. It can be easy to forget what you like, but this way you can keep track and also note down estimated prices for these goals. That way, you know exactly how much you need to save to achieve the renovation of your dreams.
