Aluminium is a fascinating element. First discovered in 1825, aluminium is the most abundant and most used metal on Earth, thanks to its lightweight and durable properties. While it is naturally resistant to oxidisation and corrosion, aluminium needs to be cleaned to maintain its appearance. Used by Australia’s most innovative balustrade system, ULTRALOX INTERLOCKING® TECHNOLOGY, the architectural powder coatings are organic coatings that must be regularly cleaned and maintained to ensure the decorative and protective properties of the coating are retained. Check out their advice for how to clean your balcony and your aluminium balustrades.
How To Clean Aluminium Balcony Railings & Balustrades
Balcony cleaning is a must for any deck, patio, or verandah. Fortunately, cleaning aluminium doesn’t require expensive chemicals or proprietary cleaning detergents. All you need is some warm water, a pH neutral (pH 5 to 8) cleaning solution, and a regular cleaning cloth or sponge. Avoid using solvents such as thinners or solutions containing chlorinated hydrocarbons or ketones, as these will damage the aluminium coating. For tougher stains, alcohol wipes are your best friend. Just make sure to rinse the layer immediately after cleaning.

How Often Should You Clean Aluminium Balustrades?
Aluminium creates a protective layer that resists oxidation and corrosion thanks to its physical chemistry, making it especially useful in coastal environments and pool areas. That being said, environmental factors can cause some issues. Consult your installer for best maintenance practices based on your location.
If you live within 2km of the seashore, Ultralox recommends cleaning their aluminium balustrades twice a year. Those that live a little further away can get away with cleaning once a year. Just be sure to maintain fully documented records throughout the 20-year limited warranty period.
