Five Steps for Proper Fence Selection – Home Inside

Fences are that special element in every home which separates your property and your home from public space or others’ private territory. It’s usually a very noticeable aspect which impacts the impression other people have of your home and maybe you, as a person. Picking the wrong fence can damage the aesthetics and the look of your home while also raising safety concerns. We’re not talking about burglars or thieves alone. There are vandals, forest animals, etc. To not run into such trouble – select and build a proper fence! Here’s how you avoid fence-related troubles!

Step 1 – Plan it out

When it comes to fences, and putting one up, it’s really important to plan everything out. However, before getting ahead of yourselves, think about the perimeter it has to cover, how much exposure you want, how tall and thick it should be as well as whether it fits into the neighbourhood. A huge concrete fence or a massive fence from bushes would definitely be needlessly eccentric in a minimalistic environment, etc.

It is advisable to contact construction and fencing experts to help with the planning. There are usually budget concerns as well. Construction experts can get you a realistic estimate.

Step 2 – Select the right material

There is an abundance of fencing materials out there. Metal, concrete, plants and of course wood are highlights of the list. Wood, being the most traditional option is just right when you are looking for a cozy environment for a reasonable cost. Metal fences are usually high-end and draw a parallel between artistic and functional, concrete fences are versatile, but look heavy and lack elegance while plants feel and look natural but are heavy on maintenance.

For most people, wood will top the list. If you think that it looks too generic and simple, you can be surprised with things like burnt (charred wood). Wood charring technologies like the Japanese Yakisugi turn regular wood into a much more luxurious and practical construction material. So if you’re looking for a fence, don’t overlook charred wood fence options!

Step 3 – Think about maintenance

As we’ve mentioned, some fences will require more care than others. Metal and concrete are probably the least demanding, but elegance is not their best aspect. Besides, they were quite expensive.

Natural fencing is very hard to maintain and applicable in a limited number of environments. Wood is the most versatile when it comes to maintenance. Cedar is great for fences but is cedar siding hard to maintain.

Step 4 – Integrate gates or passageways

If you want a fence, always plan out gates and passageways. One should be suited for your vehicle (driveway) and there should also be at least one more walkthrough gate. Depending on the size of your territory, plan gates and passageways accordingly.

Step 5 – If needed, add smart systems

Smart systems refer to video monitoring and gate automation. It’s really bothersome to get out of the car every time you want to leave or get back. Besides, video monitoring can help identify guests or shoo away unwanted bypassers.
