There are so many different kinds of throw blankets. Over the years, you may start to find yourself with a whole collection of them, just stored away in the closet with no idea how to use them or what to do with them.
Thankfully, throw blankets are versatile and can be used for almost anything. If they match your style, you can throw them somewhere to add a pop of color or some depth. If they don’t, they can make excellent outdoor or travel blankets.
On Your Bed
Do you have a throw blanket that you love but it doesn’t really fit the theme of the rest of your home? Throw it on your bed. It can add a burst of color to your bedroom, or just be an extra blanket for those cold nights.
If it fits your guest room or children’s bedroom, you can use it as an extra texture and color there as well. Just fold it and run it along the foot of the bed. It provides a bit of decoration and also provides your guest with an extra blanket if they get cold.
You can also just toss it over the corner of the bed for a messy look, or fold it over the headboard for a different kind of decoration.
In the summer, you can replace your heavy, hot comforter with a thinner throw blanket as well.
On a Chair or Sofa
If you have a throw that matches your living room decor, consider placing it on a couch or a chair. You can place throw blankets in all sorts of ways over or on a piece of furniture to convey different styles and moods.
The blanket can be simply decorative or can serve the dual purpose of warming up your feet when cuddling on the couch and watching TV or reading.
Blankets with extra texture, such as ones with tassels or pom-poms, do well being thrown over the back of the chair so they are on display. You can throw it on there pretty haphazardly for a messy, lived-in look, or fold it with solid, straight lines to make the space look tidy and minimalist.
The placement of the blanket can change up the look. You can have it on the back of the couch, hanging over an arm, or in the middle of the couch. Try various styles and locations to see what makes your space pop best.
In a Basket
If you have an empty space in your living room and don’t know how to fill it, consider a basket of pillows and blankets. It provides a comfortable feeling to the room, but it doesn’t create any more mess.
Find a cute basket that fits your style, and fill it up with neatly folded blankets and perfectly plump pillows. There are all sorts of blanket baskets out there, some being wicker, rope, and quilted, in a variety of colors.
This is a great way to add a touch of softness to the room and to display your various throw blankets. It’s still storage, like an ottoman, but it allows the blankets to be seen as part of the decoration.
As an Art Piece
Speaking of decoration, why not just use a throw as an art piece? Find a frame that fits your blanket’s dimensions and hang it on the wall. If there’s a specific part of the blanket you really enjoy, fold it so just that area is showing.
This gives you a unique and interesting art feature and fills up empty wall space. If you want a bit more texture, hang it on the wall without a frame.
As an Outdoor Blanket
Do you live somewhere that has a mix of warm and cold weather? If so, you may want to keep a blanket outside. That way, you can stay and enjoy the starry sky a little longer on cooler nights.
Keep the blanket in a sealed basket unless you need it or expect guests to reduce the amount of pollen and debris that gets on it and reduce the damage from the sun.
As a Table Runner
Do you have a thinner throw blanket that perfectly matches your coffee table decor or your dining room? Consider using the blanket as a table runner. You can fold the blanket up into a narrow strip, or get crafty and cut it into strips.
Just make sure it is long enough to be a proper table runner. You may also want to avoid thicker blankets, as they can make the decor you place on top of them unstable and more likely to tip over.
On Trips and Rides
Are you someone who is always cold? You may feel better taking a blanket with you wherever you go. Find a smaller, thinner one and place it in a tote, beach bag, or carry-on. Then you can have it for plane rides, in your hotel, or even in your charter sprinter van when you are going on a trip with friends.
This is a great option for a throw blanket that has been well-loved. It may not be pretty enough to use as a display piece anymore, but it can still keep you warm and comfortable on your travels.
